Isn't it amazing that for some reason the best posts in any forum never mention the current stock price fluctuation? ;-) I've never contemplated buying Netscape until today. I figure its one simple question:

Will Microsoft crush Netscape like the little (relatively) pest it is?

Doesn't Microsoft crush all its competitors?

Mostly. There are two examples where Microsoft lost (or hasn't won yet):

1. America Online seems to have withstood and come out ahead. I can guess this is because they reached critical mass with a sound business model. AOL is better than MSN in delivering content. America Online, NOT Microsoft, was the dominant branded name. IMO, Netscape is the dominant branded name in browsers, not Microsoft.

2. Lotus Notes/cc:mail. Before Netscape this was public enemy #1 in Redmond. However, MS Exchange never came close to supplanting Lotus Notes. I would love to draw parallels with Netscape's penetration into the Intranet market and Lotus Notes ability to dominate the Microsoft products in that area of corporate computing. However, I know little on either subject.
