Reverse stock splits can be disastrous. Bill Mathews in his book Winning Big with Bargain Stocks on page 138 states:

"In 13 years of recommending stocks I have seen more than 30 companies execute reverse splits, and more than 90 percent of them ended up lower in value than before the reverse split. My statistics show that in almost every case, after a reverse stock split the share holder's value decreases from 35 to 50 percent or more."

It appears to me that those who desire a reverse stock split are shorts. ;-)
