While at Cebit (demonstrating software on Digital Alpha :-)
I had a chance to ask a few questions on microprocessors.

IBM
-currently 0.16 u ASIC, 7 metal layer copper
-Power 2, 64 bit
-Summerset (IBM+APPLE+MOT) (I am not sure about the spelling )
603/604/740/750 The 750 class is clocked up to 300MHz
-x86 4 million units for Cyrix, 3 Million K6

The guy I talked to believes "there will be 3 survivors, namely
Intel, IBM and Sparc"
They derive considerable strenghts from embedded devices.
For Somerset, they say they have done their job and now it's
up to Steve Job to do his

SUN Micro
I asked abouth the road map: they told me they are all set to
ship 400MHz US "when needed". They will support US beyond MERCED.
Contrary to IBM, US is the same processor across their product range.

INTEL
I saw a rendering demo on a box with twin slot 2 matching the
performance of a 500 MHz alpha. Cool.
No comments on Merced schedule. No comments on the skeptical
response to Celeron ( here I talked to a PR person that used
to work for DIGITAL )

COMPAQ
they told me they will ship quad Pentium II SMP systems in the
second half of 1998, employing DESCHUTES @ 400MHz
