Think you are exaggerating a little here?

No. Not even the all-powerful INTC can ship a CPU with >50M transistors and bizarre memory subsystem requirements that can't go into a desktop machine for less than $1k. As for running s/w slower than a x86, it's true. Read the documentation. It will be *much* faster on code compiled and optimized for a vliw arch, but will be slower processing IA32 instructions sequentially than the comparable x86 chip of the day.
