I like to look at what each company brings to the table to fill the missing pieces. An example- A bank goes after a brokerage firm to fill a gap. A big retail house goes after an investment banking firm to fill the gap. That's why DLJ looks attractive to domestic and foreign groups. Think of Dresdner or any other foreign bank or brokerage firm wanting a U.S. presence. Who would they go after? Well, if your weak in U.S. M&A or investment banking, Go after DLJ, Lehman or Bear Stearns. If you want retail, go after A.G. Edwards or PaineWebber. On the domestic side, the same holds true. It is much cheaper to buy a franchise as opposed to tying to build one.
