How gas and oil assets are stated on a company's balance sheet is regulated by the SEC. Proven recoverable reserves cannot be overstated or the company risks violations. The dollar figure is simply the current market price of oil at the time the balance sheet was calculated. Since the market price of oil fluctuates the balance sheet is just a snapshot of the company at that point in time.

Now I understand most of the posters here, ignorant of the oil business, and ignorant of relative risk.
