Mr. Cowpland preferred to concentrate on what he sees as Corel's sunny future.

"Although we've seen little revenue to date (from Java technology)," he said, "perhaps 50 per cent of our activity could be Java within three to four years and Corel will be one of the leaders."

There is an outside chance he might eventually prove to be right. But after profoundly disappointing investors for more than two years, he has discovered that practically no one is willing to accept his views on faith.

"We need to see some proof," said Ms. Orr. The first-quarter numbers didn't provide it.
