Java is not just the OS of choice for fashion jewelry as that "smart" card discussion so eloquently demonstrates. That's not to disparage the Java ring, but there are far more important markets being sought after. The reason terminals have remained so popular for so long, in spite of the availability of PCs, is the compelling value they offer in terms of simplicity of installation, maintenance and functionality. Java adds the power of a PC to the elegance and value of the terminal to create a whole new breed of device. Java is not a crude, do-it-yourself boat anchor; each Java device is an elegant, intelligent extension of the global network -- [sniff] excuse me, [sniff] but does somebody have a kleenex I can borrow?
