Linda sez: Adobe should be more grateful to Apple. Where would Adobe be now without Apple?
And Apple without Adobe!
Dr. John's Postscript language represented a huge leap forward for the Mac market when it was made available in their first consumer level Laserwriter, ultimately leading to the complete re-invention of the the entire graphics/publishing industry.
I suppose it's a bit of the old chicken and the egg, as Adobe's Postscript relied on Apple to market it, and once it was adopted the whole thing snowballed for both of them.
But now it's all changing as computers users come to their cpus with much different needs, and much more of what they do will never make it to paper. IMHO Adobe has been trying to re-shape itself.
There are those that feel that if Postscript had been adopted as a universal data interchange format instead of the common raster-based facsimile format, we'd probably be a lot further ahead on a road to the paperless office. Imagine color faxes, interactive memos, real photos, etc instead of the gritty 200dpi stuff we get now. Once again it's all starting to change with their portable document format, especially in the rapid transmission of timely materials like display advertising for newspapers and magazines. Once again Adobe leads the way. And oddly enough Apple is seated once again to present this technology in their upcoming Rhapsody products, which will utilize display-Postscript to make very efficient server/client interaction possible with incredibly accurate screen displays with capabilities that make one drool (well, me anyway).
For Adobe to come out with these negative comments about their long-time ally is troubling and suggests greater diffculties with their organization are afoot...or maybe it's all part of the current pre-announcment trend that's seems to be in vogue (in this quarter at least), or maybe they too are part of the push for 23.50...?
After much blather, I say,
