Without Java Sun won't be worth a hill of beans because Microsoft has a monopoly on the world's applications platform which it could easily leverage, over time, into a monopoly server platform. This discussion about monopoly status is not all smoke and mirrors sprinkled with sour grapes, although some of it is. Without Java, Sun would be slow roasted into thin air. It would take many years but it would happen, IMO.
Fast forward to the future: March 27 1998. Java is firmly entrenched. The banking industry, retailers, broadcasters and other markets see Microsoft as a threat to their respective markets. IBM, Motorola, HP, Oracle, Sony and over a half a million Java developers have already woken and smelled the coffee. So what's Sun worth without Java? I don't know, what's Nike worth without feet? |
