NT 5.0 arrives (sort of) www5.zdnet.com

And I sort of missed this important news. We get new terminology, too.

Microsoft Corp. is making available to thousands of technical beta testers an interim beta release of NT 5.0.

NT5B2 is the enterprise beta, but I don't know what to call interim NT5B2. Speaking of bloated middleware OS's. . .

Some testers who were notified of availability of the product on Friday said the Interim release was too large for them to download. Microsoft is telling testers of the Intel X86 version to allocate more than 400 MB of hard disk space for a "fresh-installation" download the NT Workstation Interim release (or 300 MB for an upgrade installation) and Intel X86 NT Server Interim testers to have nearly 500 MB available for a fresh installation (or nearly 400 MB for an upgrade).

"They've put everything but the kitchen sink in the new build," said one tester, who said he had yet to find the release notes on Microsoft's NT beta download site.

Cheers, Dan.
