RIG COUNT March 27 - Apr 2, 1998

Offshore rig counts remain unaffected by oil price fluctuations

HOUSTON: Offshore rig counts recorded little week-to-week change, and oil price fluctuations appear to be
having little impact on the rig market.

In the U.S. Gulf of Mexico, one more rig is under contract today compared to one week ago. This week, 171 of
the 176 mobile offshore drilling units in the region are under contract. Gulf of Mexico offshore rig utilization is
97.2 percent.

The European offshore rig count continues unchanged at 106. The 110-rig European offshore drilling fleet's
utilization rate is 96.4 percent.

One rig was retired from the worldwide offshore rig fleet, but the contracted rig count is unchanged from last
week. With 585 of the world's 609 mobile offshore drilling rigs under contract, worldwide offshore rig utilization
is 96.1 percent.
