Do you feel the "social welfare" states of Western Europe have learned their lesson and will become more free market friendly?

I've seen the same commentary regarding the Euro hurting the dollar.

I heard that Germany's VAT is going to 16% from 15%. Is that true? If so, not a good sign that they're getting religion about how to deal with double digit unemployment.

What do you know about gold backing for the Euro?
