<<We are approaching a bottom for disk drive sector:>>
My concern is with the possibility for a double bottom. What happens this summer when inventories start to get back into line (optimistic case) and
1)Quantum stops showing restraint on sales into distribution
2)Seagate and WDC get their production and product problems figured out and begin trying to recapture lost market share
3)Maxtor and Samsung get thier Chinese facilities into production, doubling capacity for each
Another concern is one raised in a question in the Quantum pre-announcement conference call where one participant stated that there had been an industry meeting where Compaq really beat up on drive suppliers. Didn't get much detail but it tied in with a comment an IBM friend had made aboout Campaq planning to really beat up the drive companies to have product for the sub zero PCs. Given Compaq's power and problems, this seems highly credible.
