I spent a few minutes searching and although these are not definitions of the term, they talk about it's use. Pretty fascinating.

In the FTTC access system, unidirectional digital video broadcast services, interactive video services, broadband data services, private line special services and traditional telephony services are transported to the host digital terminal (HDT) element of the FTTC access network (Figure 1). Selected services are connected onto a passive optical network (PON) to optical network units (ONUs) subtended by the HDT. Services are then connected through a passive shared copper network using either coax or twisted pair to customer premises equipment (CPE), set-tops, or PCs.

16. PON (Passive Optic Network)

PON (Passive Optic Network) - an urban communications network based on optic fibers connecting the public exchange with residential homes. The connection to each home is made through a single optic fiber, instead of a large number of copper wires as in the past. The connection to equipment in the end-user's home will continue to be through copper wire pairs. In the future, PON will enable the provision of wide-band communications services.
