"heavyweight shorts usually DO know something"
Yes, I would agree. However, in this case, they may be assuming that the Chinese are "dumb" and won't look to do what the "smart" Koreans did.. ie, maximize their own interests by acquiring not just technology but full scale engineering and manufacturing of all the pieces. At the present time, the Q seems to have a good track record of giving away its technology, for mutual benefit of course.
Finally, is you were in China, would you want a cell phone that also talked to satellite? How about one that roamed in the U.S.? How about one that also allowed you to send faxes, e-mail.. a few of those for each small factory plugs you into the world. An you do not need a local set of base stations to get you service, all you need is the satellite for the first few years until the local infrastructure gets built out. That way you don't build low return on investment infrastructure!
In my mind, China can leapfrog all the past deployment models, by joining the Q!
No, I think the shorts have it wrong, they assume that Asia is represented by the smaller tigers... it is not anymore... the big tiger is awake and a lot more capable that we are accustomed to thinking! |
