Sony did not get involved to finance TCOMA's purchase! Sony got involved because they want to be in this business. They missed out on PCs and now TVs and PCs are converging and if they didn't hurry they were going to lose this battle too. The alliance eliminated a potential competitor and gave GIC Sony's Technology, manufacturing, distribution and brand image. But a 5% interest is pocket change to Sony and they have always wanted the whole thing.
