Two other areas attracting venture capitalists are small telecom niches: digital subscriber lines and competitive local exchange carriers. While big communications conglomerates offer complex systems with huge infrastructures, venture capitalists see CLECs and DSLs as ways to provide customized "last mile" solutions. "The continuing consolidation of the telecommunications business and the scaling up of big company products and systems has created major business opportunities," says Lee Greenhouse, an independent technology consultant in New York. Because large companies can't afford to service niche customers and offer niche products, entrepreneurial companies are seizing these business segments, he adds. Some of these segments may not be large enough to create independent companies, but their investors hope to either consolidate properties or sell them to a corporate partner.
DSL has taken on a new importance because venture investors see it as part of the arsenal to provide high-speed Internet access. With Compaq Computer, Intel, and Microsoft agreeing to back a common technical standard called universal ADSL, the emerging area has taken on new credibility. But because installing DSL is a cumbersome process, many investors think the telcos will rely on small companies to provide not only the technology, but also the service.
