But because installing DSL is a cumbersome process, many investors think the telcos will rely on small companies to provide not only the technology, but also the service.

Small companies can win contracts from major carriers if a giant doesn't offer a total solution. ALA and soon Siemens will be offering end-to-end DSL and who will a GTE or BA or USWest choose, one of them or a little guy with one part of the solution? I'm not saying they need to merge but I do think they need to partner --- and many already have. Right now DSL is a niche product. Five months from now when Deutsche Telecom rolls out its first 20K lines, it won't be.

Fun to watch the progress, isn't it.

Of course few of us have the opportunity to be part of VC funding, so these issues don't really arise. If we were, we'd do well to ask if our investment would be allowed to go the whole nine yards to an IPO or if it would be bought out privately. More risk; more reward.
