David, would you say the stealth lowering of FY'99 estimates means that people are getting more positive or less positive about the future?

Someone's been lowering their estimates, right? And yet, when's the last time you saw a report on CNBC? Reuters? Dow Jones?

Although it's quite romantic to think of people like Maria B. hiding out behind potted plants diligently seeking out "scoops", a lot of it's just media relations feed.

Ever notice that there are times when the press will run a story such as "so and so has cut estimates, but leaves ratings unchanged"?

And yet, isn't that exactly what's happened on this particular issue? Certain so and so's have indeed cut their numbers and left ratings unchanged.

Is it just a bunch of "honest brokers" trying to give the best possible estimate?

Or is it a type of signalling between firms and their clients when an outright ratings change would be simply too detrimental to client interests (i.e. we're lowering our numbers, hint, hint, so don't come crying to us about being blindsided down the road)?

Good trading,

Tom
