Your Physics PhD isn't keeping up with things. The interim solution is onboard steam reformation of hydrocarbon fuels. The long term solution will be carbon nanotubule storage of solar-electrolytically produced H2 gas. Both will prove to be economically competetive with gasoline, and in the long term, far cheaper when you consider we don't have to spend $40 billion bombing the piss out of Iraq every eight years.
