Ibexx, >>>Trust me, dear Mary, a technically trained person in general makes a better CEO for a high tech company than a sales person or an accountant would--not being chauvinistic here either. <<<

You are not going to get an argument from me. It is lot easier for a technical guy to learn business than it is for a business guy to learn the technical stuff. But the technical guy has to become a business person. In other words, he has to be able to focus on broader issues and get away from obsessing over minutia. Let the technical lifer do the obsessing over the details. He has to learn to delegate and not to micro manage.

But, the toughest thing for a technical guy is to develop charisma - that is sometimes needed to get the troops marching just by snapping your fingers and without having to explain everything to the nth degree.

But I agree. I would rather have a guy with full command of the technical details who has changed his focus to the business end rather than some marketing guy trying to manage a technology company who will never develop a full grasp of the technical details.
