I haven't heard anything that tells me that Merced will be a factor at all soon. It is vapor silicon as far as I am concerned. After that, as I was reminded last week, it probably will still be slower because of the legacy code it will run (and he speculated the chip may be even later).
As for chips from Samsung, they will bust their collective butts to produce the best chip they can. Intel has to fab it with their best process for 7 to 10 years as I remember it, no pressure required.
I repeat, if CPQ "pushes" the Alpha, the "users'" applications will 'smoke'....
