My candidates for potential gorillas include:
SDTI (proprietary security protocols that might become standard) CYCH (some suggest they already control 80% of online transactions, we'll see) RNWK (setting standards for streaming multimedia, but Microsoft may have a lot to say about that) VNWK (could become the de-facto network control standard, but very early play)
Clearly all of these have problems to overcome, which is why they are still far from the gorilla category. Competition, acceptance of the technology, etc. But I figure if they are gorilla candidates, they are good mid-term plays even if they do not become gorillas.
Concerning the book's list of potential gorillas, they have only gone up a few percentage points since last fall, when the list was made. That's not to say they are no longer gorilla candidates, but it does show that you need a lot of patience and that it's anyone's game to play. |
