I don't really want to say much about Ion propulsion, at least for now.

But I will say that everything I have read here is true, especially ccryder's comment about it requiring lots of power. Also that it adds immensely to mechanical complexity. I could go on and on, but it is one of those gray areas where I'm not sure if I could be divulging proprietary information. Let's see... I think I will also add that with bigger launch vehicles (like a Proton), it is possible to get more lifetime by the brute force method - add more fuel. That pretty much wipes out the ion propulsions advantage, with a few disadvantages thrown in for good measure.
