George,

Earlier on, you had expressed concern re: the patent
covering the voice compression/ packet streaming
process.

My friend the programmer/ internet author did some
checking and his response is that the patent is pretty
secure. It's the algorithm which is protected, regardless
of whether that algorithm works with another os.

This has come up a lot with Java programming. There'
s also a book on PGP (Pretty Good Protection) encryption
technology which gives a brief history of patents as
in the PGP case and the author points out that a developer
facing the possibility of infringing on someone else's patent
will almost always license the patented technology rather
than litigate to produce a new version, because patent
litigation is so expensive (more expensive than licensing).
