CoCa-Cola sees strong global volume growth
March 30, 1998 08:20 AM

ATLANTA, March 30 (Reuters) - Soft-drink giant Coca-Cola Co. KO on Monday projected a rise of about 13 to 14 percent in unit case volume in the first quarter, with the largest rate of growth seen in Latin America.

The expected gains, an improvement over a 9 percent rise in the same period in 1997, are a result of "continued momentum throughout the worldwide system and excellent execution at the local level," the company said in a statement.

Coca-Cola said it sees worldwide gallon sales up 13 to 14 percent in the period.

First quarter unit case volume in its Latin America Group is expected to rise by 18 to 19 percent, while North American unit case volume growth is projected at 5 percent, led by growth of 5 percent in United States.

In the Greater Europe Group, first quarter unit case volume is projected to grow 16 to 17 percent, the company said. Unit case volume growth in both the Africa Group and the Middle and Far East Group are expected to increase 17 to 18 percent.

The company noted that the current first quarter benefits from extra shipping days due to "unusual calendarization." Without the extra days, worldwide unit case volume will grow by 9 to 10 percent in the period, Coca-Cola projected.

The first quarter increase in shipping days will be offset by an equal reduction of days in the fourth quarter, with no effect seen on results for the full year.
