The problem is that the volume of sub $1K chips is "stolen" from PCs that would have sold for over $1500 last year. That volume cannot be foregone by intel over the long term. INTC was blindsided by the rapid descent in memory and drive prices which pulled the cost of a PC box down precipitously. For once they were without a strategy to respond to an inflection point. However, they are more capable than most of remaking themselves to meet a challenge.
