Barrett, who is scheduled to assume the chief executive's post from Andy Grove, said he expected memory chip prices to recover from the second half of 1999.

Intel wants DRAM makers to continue to invest in the latest DRAM technology to prevent future supply problems which would drive up personal computer prices, Barrett said.

''We're very interested in seeing an adequate supply of state-of-the-art DRAMs going forward,'' Barrett said.

''We would like to see leading DRAM producers invest in the latest in technology. It's to our benefit.''
