Sister Mary Jon Scott,

I apologize for the ambiguity. I did not mean to imply that "exempli gratia" literally translated meant "for example". "Example given" is a more literal translation, but not the derivation. "Example given" is a good mnemonic, like "after death" for A.D., which really stands for "anno domini".

For you troglodytes on the board, a mnemonic is an easily remembered "placeholder" for something that is more difficult to memorize. Some other classic mnemonics: "HOMES" for remembering the names of the Great Lakes, "ROY G. BIV" for the colors of the visible portion of the electromagnetic spectrum, and "RICE" for what to do about a sprained knee.
