Jon, the point here is that the SEC should be overseeing the safety of the investors of publicly traded companies. If statements are made in filings to the SEC that are untrue, then the SEC usually (sometimes with prodding from investors) follows up with the company. These are suppose to be private (not announced by the SEC) inquiries, and if there is impropriety, then we read about it in the SEC digest and in publicly announced statements from the SEC.
