Kasha--I have checked Chu Mei Ash's book 'Zen of Shorts' and unfortunately don't have a direct answer to your question. However this passage seems to have some bearing:

Chu Mei Ash left his classes on shorting open to all who cared to attend. Normally his students were earnest in their desire to learn. However on occasion people would come who were interested in mocking the great master short or try to trip him up. One such time a trader who hated shorting came and asked this question: "Chu Mei Ash, it seems to me that shorting is very stupid and you are stupid for doing so. For is it not true that should I short the wrong stock I could lose wealth without limit? And it seems that sooner or later I must choose the wrong stock, for the more I short the more likely this becomes."
The Great Master replied, "I am glad you spoke of yourself when you asked this question, for I of course place limits to my losses with my broker so I cannot lose too much."
"However even for one such as you it is not possible for you to lose uncountable wealth. For indeed long before you had done so, you would be arrested, all of your assets taken, and then you would be sold to a house of joy at the waterfront to pay your remaining debt. Now before you protest that this would be no better or even worse than losing unlimited wealth, it is wise to look at this in other ways."
"For now such is your Karma that your existence brings no merit to you or pleasure to any. Indeed, in so far as the world is concerned you are like a wart on a lovely Geisha's face. So would not this be a betterment for all. You could begin to work off the incredible burden of bad Karma you are stricken with. And further you would now bring great pleasure into the world not just to one but to scores of sailors daily."
"I realize you may not hold to the teachings of Lord Buddha. Or to any teachings at all, even so there would be benefits to you in this world. For most surely the owners of the joy house would endevour to beat you with frequency and vigor in an attempt to break the terrible grip on you held by the twin demons of ignorance and stupidity. This attempt could only result in your improvement."
For some reason the trader sought no more of the Master Chu Mei Ash's wisdom that day. The trader never did begin to short, even so he was to lose his fortune. He borrowed money to buy stock of a rice company that regrettably had a great fire break out mysteriously in their main warehouse, shortly after the Master Chu Mei Ash had shorted the company. The trader was indeed sold for his debt to a joy house on the waterfront, everything the Master stated occurred except for him bringing great pleasure to many sailors. For no sailor ever said he was any better than adequate.
