Gene, >>>"According to Volpe Brown it is rumored that AMD's yeilds are up from about 20% at the end of December to as much as 80% now."
As much as 80%? Fine, anyone can get lucky once, as in with one wafer. The way Sanders spins things, he could brag about 80% yield based on not only just one wafer, but on just one row on one wafer! Meanwhile, the rest of the week's results could be, say, 40%.
BTW, did you know that it is highly NOT RECOMMENDED TO BUY ANYTHING FROM A COMPANY THAT IS EXPERIENCING YIELD PROBLEMS. That is because what causes a high percentage of rejects: pinhole defects and metal layer shorts, will be present even in "good" chips, from a vendor who is having yield problems. It's just that they are not bad enough YET to cause a failure. With time, these marginal but tested "good" chips will fail because of things like metal migration worsening the situation until you have a short and a catastrophic failure. Anyone who buys anything but Intel is only asking for trouble. When IBM builds AMD's chips, things might change, unless AMD also has a marginal design, also a strong rumor.
