I am hearing basically the same things as you. However, I am told that the GX3/Vortex had too many features that effected the size of the chip to the point that it had to be downsized. As for the strategy of "holding" back designs that JP was talking about, this is what homever talked with him was referring to.

We are dealing with finite architectures that can only fit so much on a chip. With that in mind one would have to conclude that .25 micron better get here a lot quicker than anticipated or we will have a decent product today and then another 12-18 months of waiting for the next rev. I hope not!
