Gosh, Alex, I've been trying to think of something helpful or supportive to say, and I come up blank. At least you're getting good advice from our Flicker and jhild. And your letter is certainly well-written. I don't know what else you can do.
We all seem to live in a certain amount of fear these days. Even in our snobby Yuppieville there are groups of teens who like to gather and cause problems. On many of the lovely lawns are tire tracks where these boys wait for rain and then drive onto the lawns spinning their wheels to dig ruts. (They call it "mudding".) One home had all its newly landscaped plants and shrubs dug up and just thrown around. It's the sheer wanton destruction that I find sad and scary. It's not like these kids are hungry and stealing a piece of bread. I don't understand what it is they're getting -or trying to get- from it.
Why are you opposed to a park- is it that you worry it would be a place where kids would hang around late at night and get into more trouble? I'm just sorry that that unpleasantness hangs over these wonderful first months with Helen.
