Jason - Re:" How long has Intel been working on x86 microprocessors? 25 years? What about AMD? I thought so..."
For reasons of accuracy, Intel introduced the 8080 in 1974. AMD copied and/or licensed it (I'm not exactly sure which) and was producing these in 1976, at least.
A friend of mine bought an early home computer ( a SOL computer, I believe), and it used an AMD 8080. This was 1977 - 1978, as I recollect.
Thus, AMD and Intel have been at this together for 20 and 22 years respectively.
Re:" However, AMD has been able to develop design methodology, design implementation, process technology, etc. which resulted in the K6 (far superior to PPro in my humble opinion) in a fraction of Intel's time..."
NO! AMD sh*t canned their original K6. The current K6 was designed by NexGEN, which AMD bought in January or February of this year. I would hardly describe this NexGEN/K6 purchase as starting from Square 1.
I admire your respect for AMD, but the facts don't justify your comments.
Whether the K6 is better than the Pentium Pro remains to be seen. Rumors were made this week that the K6 is out of FAB but if you have seen any real bench marks comparing the two - Congrtulations! You are the FIRST.
By the way - The Pentium Pro details, released in February, 1995, gave the NexGEN a design target for which to aim at.
