Duncan, it is a myth that the sexual revolution and liberal attitudes have made unwed motherhood attractive. I already shared this article over at Boink, so I think you might have read it, but I will url it again. Poverty is the primary cause of unwed motherhood.
Teenagers who have not done well in school, and are not going on to college, and do not have much of a stake in their futures, are making choices to enjoy their lives now, create someone who will love them, and give themselves an identity. They obviously have an unrealistic picture of taking care of a baby, which is unfortunate.
Certainly, making sure children are well nourished is part of pulling them up out of poverty, which is in the interest of a stable society, and would tend to lower the crime rate. And as Christians, I am really surprised that you or Michael would seriously argue that it is moral or ethical for a society as wealthy as this one to deprive children, who are innocent, did not cause themselves to be poor, and deserve the protection of society, of something so essential as food. Do you think Jesus would leave children starving? I think not. As well, the school lunch program is a very small governmental expense, relatively speaking.
