Your information is interesting. Silicon Graphics keeps saying that they have the most able graphics machines out there. In fact their web servers post the highest numbers extant. Their Everest project with Netscape is aimed directly at that market. As you know they are having to protect their underside by putting out an NT machine that will feature some sort of Pentium processor. However this machine has not yet seen the light of day.

At Internet World SGI said that graphics IS their market. Maybe they just don't know.

Film based industries like radiology are ripe for picking using digital graphics. (CT, MRI, Ultra Sound, Nuclear Medicine are all computer generated scans that are translated to film. Seems to me that all this stuff stays on the computer and networks soon.)

Sterling Drug seemed a lot closer to Eastman Chemical that was spun off.

My understanding is that EK is spending huge amounts on digital technology. Since SGI still has the technological lead, it might make too much sense.

It does seem that analog graphics and film technology decline into the commodity scrabble.

You may be right that EK shouldn't buy SGI. Is there any thing they can do? They are still generating large amounts of cash. But this could dwindle quickly if they don't move into high margin stuff.
