I agree that the AOL deal seems to have good potential. I'm not an AOL subscriber, though, and don't know how popular the "research" section on AOL is that will feature the Electric Library. I think many who are confused about the value of electronic databases may wonder what the service provides that they do not get for free using a free search engine. In this respect, I think that the initiative to place the electric library in schools is extremely important, much the way that every law student in America gets free Lexis-Nexis service while she is in law school. Get them hooked on info and they will be hooked for life!

Having used the Electric Library for about a week, I certainly think they could make some improvements in the user interface. For example, it should require no more than a single click of a "next document" or "next keyword" button to take you there, instead of having to pull up the entire list of documents each time. It would also be nice to be able to get an entire page of "key word in context" references (the keyword with the surrounding, say 25 words, so you can quickly skim and pick out the most relevant articles.

Nevertheless, I think they have done quite a good job. And the pricing is quite reasonable. One real test will be whether they can retain and expand their content provider list. It would sure be nice to have the New York Times and Wall Street Journal represented, though that is probably wishful thinking.
