Ernie -

The difference here is that no one "owns" the standard behind the NC - you cite the example of Intel competing with Cisco which are 2 mature companies in well established industries crossing into each others territory . What Oracle is doing is changing the rules of the game much like Microsoft does with its products - rather than competing in Unix which is the corporates Standard - Microsoft comes up with NT - all of a sudden Everyone has to play catch up rather than microsoft and guess who laughs all the way to the bank? By changing the rules of the game with its partners - Sun, IBM, etc, Oracle has a real chance to shift the game on Microsoft - all of a sudden Shrinkwrap Billy will have to compete in a world where the desktop is not the road ahead and technology is focused around networks and servers with thin clients - not bloated, crashing obsolete PC's.

If Oracle stays "focused" as you would like - MS will scale upward and eventually get it right - its called constant improvement and microsoft eventually gets it right - they dont have the best tecnology and they dont have it first but once they stick it in a suite and bundle it and give it away- your dead. Anyway - IFMX, and SYbase are one trick ponies and it hasnt really gotten them that far has it?
