John Fowler: An interesting side note to the Pentium Pro crunch. Some of the configurations of desktop PC's (MUEI) for instance, have just dropped a 200 PP from their product list, and have gone to a 180 PP. They are, however, offering PP200 in servers, etc. The article stated that some of the "smaller" vendors may be squeezed by the shortage. It looks like the first visible effects have already hit the market. I opted out of MUEI today, because of what I saw and the stock continued down for the rest of the day.

Can Gateway or Dell be far behind, if they don't have buying contracts that take them through the holiday season? Or will Intel have corrected production output in the next 3-4 weeks, thus alleviating a real bad shortage at the peak of the buying season?

How do you think the current drop in INTC today (10/25) plays into the mix? Seems to me that besides profit taking, a near 10 point drop since reported record earnings may be more than just profit taking.

Metman
