STURBRIDGE, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 31, 1998--SpecTran Corporation (NASDAQ,NM:SPTR), which develops, manufactures and markets glass optical fibers and value-added fiber optic products, announced today that Charles B. Harrison, 60, a SpecTran director since July 1997, has been appointed President and Chief Executive Officer. Harrison succeeds Raymond E. Jaeger, who will remain Chairman of the Board.

Harrison most recently served as an engineering and management consultant for Rockwell International. In 1994 and 1995 with the position of Corporate Vice President Engineering he had primary responsibility for engineering and research activities across Rockwell's Aerospace and Defense operations. From 1991 to 1993, he was Vice President of Advanced Technology and Engineering for Defense Electronics with responsibility for research, product development, and systems engineering in Rockwell's five defense related divisions. He was also the senior executive responsible for Rockwell's Electro Optics Center.

From 1984 to 1991, he served as Chief Technology Officer and Vice President of the Network for Southern New England Telephone (SNET), directing the conversion to electronic switching and fiber optic based local and backbone transmission systems. He also served for two years
as President of Sonecor Systems, the largest of SNET's unregulated businesses.

From 1968 to 1984 he held increasingly responsible positions with Collins Radio/Rockwell International, rising to Vice President and General Manager Switching Systems Division.

Harrison received his B.S. Electrical Engineering from Oklahoma State University and M.S. Engineering degree from Southern Methodist University. He has completed all studies for his Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering from Oklahoma State University.

Commenting on the appointment, Chairman Jaeger said, ''We have been very pleased with Charles' contributions as a Director of SpecTran and are confident that the combination of his broad experience in general management and technology as well as his strong leadership qualities will advance SpecTran to even higher levels of performance and growth.
