What would replace semis? The "organic" computers we hear about but nobody's made one? Or, how about that ludicrous post that's shown up twice on SI, a couple of years apart, about the new Chinese technology that is going to be a million or so times more dense than anything Intel has? Or, maybe some new element or material that rides in with the 2028 comet, that is much better than Silicon?

I know, I know, you were going way out on a limb with the "semis out entirely" business. About ten to twelve years ago, there was beginning to be some momentum growth for another type of material for making IC's...Gallium Arsenide (GaAs). It was supposed to get so much faster than any Silicon based family, that it would take over the heart of CPU's, and everything else. Well, the likes of Intel, IBM, TI, Fujitsu, LSI Logic and more, improved CMOS to the point that there is not much more talk of GaAs, and definitely not re CPU and other high speed logic.
In conclusion, as you've been telling a certain naysayer, INTC is very low risk.
