bull-more food for thought.

From Netscape's recent earnings announcement:

"A recent report from Zona Research showed that Netscape holds a commanding lead in the Web server software market that is similar to its 80 percent share of the browser market, with 74 percent of the Web site managers surveyed on the Windows NT platform and 84 percent on UNIX running Netscape Web server software."

The operative word in the "mindshare" argument is should, as in:

"As Microsoft continues to capture a larger percentage of mindshare over Netscape, Microsoft should capture a larger percentage of sales as well."

Zona is also widley referenced as estimating the value of the intranet software market at 10 billion by the year 2000. Netscape's goal, as set forth by Marc Andreesen in a recent Larry Rose interview, is 50% of this market. This strategy allows "mindshare" to erode 14% of Netscape's currently dominating position and still be on target.

Zona is also due to release a study titled "Microsoft, the internet, and the Intranet." on Nov 1. A report overview and list of objectives is available at its web site:

Should be interesting, I'm sure both companies will use it for proof of their ability to dominate these still young and emerging markets.
