They could but keeping the socket 7 market longer would kill the PII market penetration process. If INTC pushes the Pentium MMX to 300/333 then there would be little difference in performance of the Pentium and the PII 266. There would be little incentive for consumers to buy the PII when the Pentium system is cheaper. Intel can't sell the PII cheaper than the Pentium because the die size of PII is larger than Pentium, 131mm^2 compared to 85mm^2.
