IBM Israel Develops JavaSoftware for Internet Video,Audio Broadcasting
By Ronny Lifschitz
IBM Israel's research laboratory has developed software written in the Java computer language, which facilitates the easy building of multimedia network solution modules. The system is intended for use by organizational data communications networks, or on the Internet.
The software facilitates the operation of complex communications applications, such as video and audio broadcasting on the network, network telephone service, conference calls on the network etc.
Applications of this type already exist. However, the new Israeli development is based on the new Java language, so that there is no need to install new software in order to receive all the new services.
IBM says that services can be received by all existing operating systems through a standard browser, and support software does not have to be installed.
The system was developed at IBM's Haifa audio/video research centre. IBM Israel says the system has undergone recent trials under Windows, Macintosh, and Unix operating systems, and on IBM's network computers, that operate only using Java software.
