Maybe Benson kicked Reed out because he looks like Dilbert?
Actually I think this happened very suddenly because Reed
is profiled in the March 30, 1998 "InternetWeek" Interview
- Insights on the Networked Economy.

The article starts:
"He came from the outside and he's willing to call a spade
a spade."

Possibly Benson didn't like Reed being so open about Cabletron's
weaknesses, and the direction he was taking the company, including
selling off Spectrum (the company's crown jewels), as well as the
emphasis on partnering and acquisitions. Trying to emulate
John Chambers won't work in Cabletron's neck of the woods.

Just idle speculation...
