What a great bunch of Thread junkies!
I've started up trouble on other threads because when a discussion gets too one sided, I like to see what issues and views will rise to the surface when we stir the pot a bit. Thanks to all of you for not making these discussions personal, but rather trying to compare what we know and what we speculate to help each of us arrive at an investment decision we can live with, whether it turns out to be right or wrong.
Here's come more of my inane musing for your entertainment:
I'm still disturbed by the constant short position on this stock which I would have thought by now would be reduced somewhat (maybe someone could call IR for their opinion). I have seen this type of thing before with CDRD, and will share my experience with that stock here. Basically, you will sometimes see a very large short position established by a few players who often know about each other. They are often stuck because if they attempt to cover, that very action will drive up the stock price considerably and become a very expensive and futile effort to close their short positions. So rather than be responsible for actually making the stock go up, they continue to stay short, waiting for something disastorous enough to happen to get them out. I have often wondered why $8.50 seems to have been a solid bottom for this stock, and thought since Intel & MicroSoft bought in around that price, that maybe they were supporting the stock. Now I think it may be the shorts covering under $9 that help to keep a bottom in WAVO's trading range.
So, let's imagine for a moment that you're one of the guys with a portion of that million short shares looking for a good negetive event with which to cover. We all assume the next 6 months are a lock, right? Well, maybe we should consider the following. During the Beta period WaveTop's enjoyed a honeymoon period, where the press has been more of a reporting and informing nature. Once WaveTop is officially released for all the World to scrutinize, I would be a bit concerned. For now, at least, WaveTop is more of a "gee wiz" product then something you might really use and enjoy on a regular basis. If a few major reviewers pan this product enough, it would significantly affect it's future. Remember, WaveTop can't just be free to attract loyal users, because most people will have to Invest $75 for a TV-input card they may not have ordinarilly gotten in order to explore WaveTop. What we really need is a nice "gotta have" writeup in WIRED, NewsWeek, Forbes, etc. to really get this products potential audience going. And those articles can't just be informative, as that won't get the millions of PC owners who are a afraid to open their computers to install a TV card motivated, unless they read about attractive, timely content, with very cool multimedia features that would be impractical to download on a modem, they won't be motivated to get or ask for TV-input cards. I don't know why people assume they are now included with new computers. I just bought a few mail order DELLs for people homes. They had ridiculously expensive speakers systems, but none of them had TV-inputs. Anyway, if Wavephores reading this, maybe you can get Alan Alda to do one of those Scientific Frontier stories on the VBI infrustructure and content developement over there at PBS. Would'nt that be a kick in the pants! Good Luck everyone. |
