Ramsey,

Re: "Fujitsu and Hitachi hope to cut DRAM-related costs by halting production in Europe and reducing new investment."

I think it's just a sign of the times. DRAM pricing is so bad, meaning oversupply is significant, that some players will cut back in this area and shift to other types of chips, like logic, foundry, etc. In my view, this could be a near-term (but very temporary) positive because selected equipment purchases will be made for the conversion.
Beyond a quarter or two, it's a negative, because we could easily be changing the over-supply situation from one area of chips to another.

If Hitachi and others felt a DRAM recovery was imminent (as some analysts are "selling") and the long-term future was bright, would they be making plans to "stop fabricating DRAMs in Europe by 2000"?

Just my opinion,
Regards,
Teri
