Press Release: <<The study results showed symptoms in the active counterpulsation group were improved significantly compared to the control group, although event rates in both the active and inactive groups were not significantly different.>>
Fred: << I think that even if the morbidity rate were identical to other forms of intervention, the noninvasive character of the treatment and lower expense are benefits.>>
From the press release, they did not say that morbidity rate was "identical". They said "no significant difference". It is unlikely that we will ever know with this study as to whether EECP changes "event rate" (such as myocardial infarction and/ or deaths) as the number of patients enrolled is too small. You can bet that if you enrolled only 140 patients in randomized trial between Placebo and PTCA (or CABG for that matter) you will not find a difference between Placebo group and PTCA or CABG... because the event rate is small over a year and because the size of the groups is small.
On the other hand I would say that the morbidity IS changed as I consider anginal pains a disease condition. If you improve those, you improve morbidity, IMHO.
Hopefully somebody can post the abstract. As the Must-eecp trial is the only placebo controlled trial, the released data is new and encouraging.
Good luck all.
